Conor McGregor can influence change if he truly cares about fighter safety

Boxing
Conor McGregor is one of the few fighters who has the power to enact positive change in mixed martial arts. If McGregor believes that a rule change is required to make the sport safer for the competitors, a few public comments from him will go a long way toward making that happen. Jumping over the top of the cage, shoving a referee and going on a wild rant at a show in which he’s not competing or licensed as a cornerman is just about guaranteed to make others view him as an entitled rich guy and pay him little heed. McGregor is an astute man but he didn’t present himself that way at Bellator 187 on Friday in Dublin. Ferdie Pacheco – Muhammad Ali’s ‘Fight Doctor’- dies at 89

Boxing
Fernando ''Ferdie'' Pacheco, ''The Fight Doctor'' who served as Muhammad Ali's ringside physician, has died. He was 89. Pacheco's daughter, Tina Louise Pacheco, told The Associated Press that he died Thursday morning at his Miami home after prolonged illness. Pacheco was born in Tampa and opened a practice in Miami after earning a medical degree from the University of Miami. He met Cassius Clay, who would later become Muhammad Ali, in 1960 when the fighter began training with Angelo Dundee at the 5th Street Gym in Miami Beach. Pacheco worked as Ali's cornerman from 1962-1977, which included three successful title bouts. Pacheco has said he left his position after suggesting Ali retire because of serious injuries. Ali fought four more matches, losing three. Story Continues

Wilder calls out Joshua again for big heavyweight fight

Boxing
Deontay Wilder can't wait to get Anthony Joshua into the ring. He's just not sure when it's going to happen. ''I just want to prove who is the best, that's all I want to do,'' Wilder said Thursday. ''I want people to see a great fight and witness the two best heavyweights compete with each other one night in the ring.'' Wilder, who is coming off an impressive first-round knockout of Bermane Stiverne, said his representatives have been in contact with Joshua's camp, and the two sides are exploring ways to stage the heavyweight unification fight. It could happen sometime next year, Wilder said, if Joshua's handlers aren't too protective of the British fighter. ''I think they're hesitant for a reason,'' Wilder said by phone to The Associated Press. ''They've got a great thing...
